News from the North
Greetings
This month I will forego the usual reports on workshops, weddings, worship and home improvements. All of these have had their place over the past weeks, yet seem rather unimportant in the moment.
Promising a future rain the still heat laden with humidity makes the day ripe for contemplation rather than summation. Becoming still and silent is somewhat easier than usual in such a serene atmosphere. My lake is placid and even the most familiar creatures of water, land and sky seem to have retreated in anticipation of the coming storm.
It is Monday morning; fishermen and water skiers have returned to the busyness of city living, some having missed entirely the peace this place offers a searching soul.
Nature seems to know what humans often fail to acknowledge – the spirit of all things, large and small, requires a periodic retreat into silence before returning to the chaotic storm of change that we call life. A retreat is different than a vacation. Vacations appear to be filled with diversions, while a retreat is empty space awaiting whatever God might offer for its fullness.
Sitting here on the dock I am realizing that the “want to do” list I made earlier could have been written in invisible ink, for want and desire leave a person’s heart when it is allowed to fill with gratitude for the abundance of beauty provided in the simplest things this silence has to offer.
Mother Turtle just poked her head above the water’s surface taking a deep breath of the hot air causing ripples that will, in minutes, reach the shore leaving their mark in the sandy beach. Retiring to the dark and quiet of Namakagon’s depth she knows little of her effect upon the bank. When I finally slip into the water I will wonder if she is beneath me as I swim knowing full well that she has little interest in my presence.
She isn’t making lists of things to do, to buy, to protect or defend. She isn’t planning her reaction to my body in the water or establishing a relationship with otters, ducks and geese. Instead she enters the silence and then emerges to harmoniously affect the world around her. She isn’t doing any thing special really – she is being special. She is being a turtle on a hot summer’s day.
Why can’t we be humans harmoniously affecting the world? Why must we make noise to drown out the still quiet voice that would guide us to our higher good filling our moments with planning, creating exceptional roles to play and super-sizing our part in the Universal Plan? I have no answer other than that we are afraid to relinquish control to God and would rather, in our intellectual arrogance, believe that we are the higher power.
After my swim I will return to wedding planners, homilies, book marketing and even work on my next novel. Before all that, however, I will add one item to my to do list: retreat into the depths of my soul in silence and emerge to affect the world positively. I hope you will join me.

For a brief time I retreat into the depth of my soul knowing that you will call me forth in harmony to affect only positive change in the world you have created for us all. Amen..
